Reducing Glass Fiber Breakage

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

PPG Industries | Lawerence Livermore National Laboratory

fact sheet

PPG Industries is working with Livermore Lab to use supercomputers to modify the process of converting molten glass to solid fiber to reduce breakage and increase yields.

Impact

iconIncreasing yield in glass fiber manufacturing by reducing glass fiber breakage.
iconImproving the fiber pull process could result in annual industry-wide savings up to $8.5 million and energy savings of 1.7 trillion BTUs.
iconUsing supercomputers, engineers and researchers were able to model temperature distribution across a 4,000 fiber-pull furnace.
iconFor the first time, engineers could see non-uniformities in the temperature distribution and glass flow of the furnace.
iconProcess improvements through combined computational and experimental effort could address the source of fiber breakage.
